Cardiothoracic Imaging Services

Cardiothoracic Radiology encompasses all modes of imaging of the thorax including the chest, lungs and heart. Practitioners are responsible for all conventional chest radiography, CT and MRI.  Greensboro Radiology is proud to offer sub-specialty trained Cardiothoracic expertise including high-resolution CT for interstitial lung disease as well as screening programs for coronary artery disease and lung cancer.  The service is fully digital and integrated with our colleagues in thoracic surgery and pulmonary medicine.

X-Ray / Fluoroscopy Services

Fluoroscopy produces a motion X-ray of the body’s organs actually functioning. X-rays are passed through the body and received by an image intensifier. The image intensifier converts the X-rays to a visible image on a monitor. Fluoroscopy is used as a diagnostic tool and in medical procedures to guide instruments through the body. Fluoroscopy equipment usually consists of a table with an X-ray tube mounted beneath it. An image intensifier, which receives X-rays after they have passed through the body, is suspended above the table. The image intensifier is connected to a monitor where the video fluoroscopy (motion X-ray) can be watched. Patients lie on the open table during the exam. Because fluoroscopy uses low-dose X-rays, the amount of radiation used during a fluoroscopy exam is minimal. X-rays are potentially harmful to a developing fetus. Please tell your doctor and your radiologist if you think you may be pregnant.

Cancer Imaging Services

Cancer may be difficult to detect, but for some types of cancer, the earlier it is detected, the better are the chances of treating it effectively. Imaging techniques - methods of producing pictures of the body - have become an important element of early detection for many cancers. But imaging is not simply used for detection. Imaging is also important for determining the stage (telling how advanced the cancer is) and the precise locations of cancer to aid in directing surgery and other cancer treatments, or to check if a cancer has returned.

Breast Imaging Services

Mammograms are x-ray exams of the breast. They are most often used to screen for breast cancer in women who have no symptoms. Mammograms and other breast imaging tests can also be used in women who have breast symptoms, such as a lump or pain, or who have a suspicious change seen on a screening mammogram. Mammography is the only screening tool that has been demonstrated through large randomized trials to lower breast cancer mortality. Those trials included all breast densities. While mammography sensitivity is somewhat lower in women with extremely dense breasts, it is still the best modality for population-based screening. Also, mammography is the only test that can reliably detect suspicious calcifications. Such calcifications are often the first sign of in-situ cancers, which (in 20% of cases) coexist with otherwise invisible invasive cancers.
