Effective legionella control in medical institutions is critical. Patients are often vulnerable or have weakened immune systems due to old age, post-operative conditions, and illness. The legionella bacteria can be lethal to these vulnerable groups. In complex water supply networks, as are found in hospitals, the bacteria can spread rapidly. Rotation of patients may mean that not all tap points are in continuous use, increasing the risk of standing water in unused pipes and thereby the risk of infection.
