Cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis are two of the most common intestinal infections worldwide. Caused by single-cell parasites (the Cryptosporidium parasite and the Giardia parasite), these diseases can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal discomfort, and weight loss.

The Entamoeba histolytica parasite causes amebiasis, an inflammation of the small intestine. The parasite is spread via the fecal-oral route. The condition is usually accompanied by diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.

Caused by the Campylobacter bacteria, campylobacteriosis is the most common human form of gastroenteritis in the world. Humans generally contract campylobacteriosis by consuming contaminated animal products. While the disease is generally not dangerous, it can be life-threatening for the elderly and young infants, as well as for people with compromised immune systems. It has also been associated with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disease.

Giardiasis, caused by the single-celled Giardia lambliaparasite, is the most common parasitic disease in the United States. As many as 100 million mild infections and 1 million severe infections are reported annually.
