The Jarvik 2000^® is designed to provide reliable support to the ailing heart for a decade or longer. Accelerated tests of the pump’s bearings show that there is so little wear that the bearings will last decades, so many more years of real-time testing are required to know whether or not the pump will achieve or exceed this challenging design objective. Presently, our longest-sustained patient was supported for over 9 1/2 years and subsequently successfully transplanted, but the ultimate durability of the device remains unknown.

Jarvik Heart is unique among makers of medical devices. We manufacture Jarvik 2000 blood pumps and many system components in-house at our facility in Midtown Manhattan. Highly specialized expertise and equipment are required, such as for ultra-precision silicon-carbide bearings and titanium components. For other components, sub-assemblies and implant sterilization, we work with top quality outside suppliers. Our operation is small, allowing us to focus on each pump and component we build. Every titanium element of every pump is shaped by dedicated machinists, polished, and inspected. The external controller and other components are assembled and tested by our highly-qualified staff of engineers and technicians. By keeping development, manufacturing, and quality assurance processes under one roof, we are able to maintain tight control over the quality of the products we produce.
