Biofilms are everywhere. Microbial biofilms account for 80% of infections in humans, multi-drug resistance and agricultural waste (spoilage), resulting in over $550B USD in associated cost on an annual basis. Current approaches to limit adverse events and costs associated with unruly biofilms utilize a century-old theory. That the use of toxic chemicals or antibiotics to curtail the growth or kill unwanted microbes is the best approach. Long-term meta-analysis data are telling us that is not the case, as multi-drug resistance in bacteria is an ever-increasing problem around the globe and the use of toxic chemicals (e.g., triclosan) to limit microbial growth poses significant health risk to humans.
