House Dust Mites

Dust mites can hardly be seen with the naked eye. Dust mites naturally thrive in indoor environment, feeding on organic detritus such as human dander. They prefer warm and humid conditions such as found in mattresses, but survive in house-dust as well. The allergenic substances are part of the mite faeces. Symptoms occur throughout the year, intensified in autumn and winter during the heating period. Mostly the mites are finding optimal living conditions in matresses, thus causing an increase of allergic symptoms during the night and early morning.

Animal Epithelia

Allergic reactions to animals are caused by proteins from hair, saliva, flakes of shed skin, urine or excrements. The allergens adhering to hair or feathers can be spread by the animal, for example by rubbing to objects like furniture or carpets. Dried allergen proteins can be swirled up with loose dust and cause allergic symptoms after inhalation.

Moulds

Moulds (e. g. Alternaria alternata) reproduce by producing large numbers of microscopically small spores, which are adapted for wind dispersal and may remain airborne for long periods. Spores can begin growing on suitable materials like food, wall paper or wood under favourable conditions, forming large colonies or mycelia. Moulds require moisture for growth and can be found on moist walls, especially bathroom walls.

Food Allergy

Food allergies are characterised by showing allergic symptoms after ingestion of certain food as for example milk, eggs or peanuts. Due to cross reactivity patients sensitsed to pollen often suffer from food allergies to fruit or vegetables. Common food allergies of toddlers and small children are egg proteins, cow milk or wheat allergy.
