Strathkelvin - Microcathode Oxygen Electrodes
This is a Clark-type polarographic electrode, with a 22 micron diameter platinum cathode and silver/silver chloride anode, connected by a buffered potassium chloride electrolyte solution. In the normal configuration the cathode is covered with a relatively low permeability polypropylene membrane, in order for the electrode to be used in unstirred solutions or where minimal stirring is required. With these membranes, there is a relatively slow response time. For fast response, as required for rapidly respiring enzyme preparations, a thin FEP membrane (used with a special electrode jacket, (P/N SI 035) is used. Rapid stirring of the medium is then necessary. The electrodes are not temperature compensated and require to be used at controlled temperatures (within + or -0.05°C). They should always be used in the electrode holder of one of the Strathkelvin accessories, so that only the tip of the electrode is exposed to the medium.
Strathkelvin - Tucker Cell
The oxygen content of blood can be measured accurately and quickly by the method of Tucker (1967). A small sample of blood is introduced into the chamber containing a solution of ferricyanide. The resulting release of bound oxygen produces an increase in PO2 which is detected by the oxygen electrode. The oxygen content can be calculated from the PO2 change. The base section of the TC 500 is identical to that of the MC 100 microcell. The cell is formed of precision-blown glass and is sealed by an acrylic plunger, through which the sample is introduced. The TC 500 is supplied with a full instruction manual.
Strathkelvin - Flowcell for Continuous In-Line Oxygen Monitoring
For continuous in-line oxygen monitoring or for connection to a flow-through respirometer chamber. The acrylic chamber of the flowcell forms a threaded connection to the integral electrode holder. Only the tip of the electrode projects into the water flow. The inlet and outlet tubes are made from stainless steel. To enable the flowcell to be immersed below the surface of the constant temperature bath containing the respirometer chamber, the electrode holder is fitted with a collar for attachment to a vertical or horizontal 6.25mm (1/4″) diameter laboratory rod.
