Thegeneration of these contami-nants within a dental practiceoccurs mainly during dentalprocedures. The use of high-speed drills and ultrasonicscaling equipment generatesfine aerosols which consist ofmoisture droplets that con-tain blood, saliva and fillingparticles. These droplets are usually between 0.5 and 5 micro-meters (µm) in diameter, and are light enough to stay airbornefor hours. Bacteria and viruses which are contained in thesemicro-droplets are easily inhaled and constitute a potentialsource of infection to the dentist, staff and patients.Mercury (Hg)Numerous studies show thatdentists and their staff havehigher than average levels ofinorganic mercury (Hg) in theirblood and urine. According tothe WHO* there is no evidencethat there is a safe level ofmercury in the body that doesnot kill cells and harm bodyprocesses. Since mercury isodourless and transformsfrom solid to gas at roomtemperature, the dangers of chronic exposure to mercury caneasily remain undetected. Mercury vapour is not only releasedand potentially inhaled when dental amalgam is placed, but alsowhen these fillings are removed. The dental practice itself can become a secondary source ofmercury vapour exposure to dentists and staff. Over the years, mercury may have gotten into floors, cracks of chairs or sinksand may now continuously release mercury vapour to the room.DisinfectantsChemical disinfectants are being used in the dental practice todecontaminate hands, instruments and surfaces. Disinfectantsthat kill germs, viruses, and fungal spores often containaldehydes (especially formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde) orphenol. Aldehydes are well-known for their sensitisingpotential and their inhalation toxicity. Exposure to aldehyde atlow doses on a continuous basis may lead to chronic toxiceffects, the symptoms of which are mostly unspecific (nausea, impairment of the memory, motivation, reactivity or dexterity).Even less toxic alcoholic compounds, such as ethanol, isopropa-nol, and n-propanol, can cause irritation of the respiratory tractsand the mucous membranes. An unpleasant disinfectant odour isoften the only indication that unhealthy air pollutants are present.Latex AllergensThe use of protective latex gloves can cause allergic reactionsdue to body contact or inhalation of latex allergens. Theseallergens adhere to the talcum powder particles of the gloveand can thus become airborne.X-Ray Development ChemicalsFor the development of x-ray films several organic chemicals, such as glutaraldehyde, are being used. These chemicals give offgases that can contribute to the contamination of the ambientair in dental environments.Air Quality – A Critical Issue in Dental EnvironmentsThe air we breathe can have a tremendous impact on our health and comfort. Dentists, staff and patients are being exposed to a widevariety of air pollutants during routine dental work. The use of chemicals and the execution of dental procedures itself leads tosignificant daily exposure. Even relatively low exposure levels to toxic compounds can, over time, lead to serious health problems.Exposure to airborne microorganisms can also increase the risk of infectious disease transmission in dental offices.* World Health Organization (WHO), 1991, Environmental Health Criteria 118, Inorganic Mercury, p.36, WHO, Geneva. The IQAir® Dental Hg™ with FlexVac™captures mercury vapour and drill aerosolsright at the source. A flexible suction duct canbe positioned close to the procedure area toremove harmful aerosols and vapours beforethey can be inhaled or disperse in the am-bient air. The system’s outstanding ability toreduce room levels of mercury has beendocumented in a research report by the re-nowned Institute of Hygiene at the Universityof Heidelberg, Germany. The IQAir® Dental Pro™ is a multi-purpose aircleaning system that has been developedspecifically to remove dental pollutants fromambient air by recirculation. This is how the air is filteredFirst, the polluted air is drawn in through ahigh-efficiency pre-filter where it is strippedof bacteria, viruses, allergens and largeraerosols.Next, the air enters the four filter cartridgeswhere a wide variety of gaseous contami-nants are removed by several types of gascontrol media. These gas filter stages removeVOCs, mercury vapour, formaldehyde, gluta-raldehyde, odours and many other gaseousand odourous contaminants. The final filter stage consists of an electrostatically charged post-filter which traps even thesmallest of particulate pollutants and microorganisms.IQAir® – The Source of Clean Air in Dental EnvironmentsAdvanced Air Cleaning TechnologyPost-Filter Sleeves• Electrostatically charged• Provide final particle filtrationGas Phase Filter Cartridges• IQAir® Dental Hg™ with FlexVac™ containsspecial mercury binding media• IQAir® Dental Pro™ contains wide-spectrum media to help remove VOC’s,mercury vapour, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and many other gaseouschemicals and odoursHigh-Efficiency Pre-Filter• HEPA-type 99% efficiency at 0.3 µm• Holds back viruses, bacteria etc.Reduction of mercury vapour with IQAir® in a room of 34.5 m3(1220 cu.ft.) at an air flow of 220 m3/h (130 cfm)Hg (µg/m3 )Reduction of particle concentrations with IQAir® in a room of 34.5 m3 (1220 cu.ft.) at an air flow of 220 m3/h (130 cfm)MinutesParticles in thousands per litre airIQAir® Dental Hg™ with FlexVac™Direct source-capture of drill aerosols andmercury vapour for peace of mind.MinutesIQAir® Dental Pro™Ambient air filtration for gaseous andparticulate pollutants in dental practices. The IQAir® Dental Series has been specifically developed to deal with contaminants commonly found in dental environments. Thesehigh-efficiency air cleaning systems feature state-of-the-art filtration technologies which effectively remove harmful airbornecontaminants and unpleasant odours. These patents cover therevolutionary modular housing design, filter design and thesophisticated control panel which allows the detailedprogramming of the IQAir® to suit individual requirements.Contact your IQAir® Authorised Dealer for more information:Visit www.iqair.comThe indoor air quality (IAQ) improvements that can be achieved with IQAir® systems depend not only on the system performance, but also on factors which are specific to that particular indoor environment, such as room size, type and concentration of contaminants and source intensity. Consult a qualified IAQ specialist to determine an effective and comprehensive IAQ strategy. Source control and ventilationshould be considered first in solving any IAQ problem.© 2003 IQAir® Group.
