The event consists of an exhibition area for new-age products and manufacturing technologies, an area for training seminars on practical and modern topics, business matching, and a highlight area showcasing modern manufacturing technologies and solutions that you can actually experience.
When the world is competing in the modern manufacturing era that is rapidly changing and emphasizes the use of technology to increase production value, Thailand, as a country with long-standing expertise in manufacturing, whether it is the automotive industry, electronic parts industry, or various processing industries, must adapt in order to compete appropriately with the changes that occur. The government, led by General Prayut Chan-o-cha, therefore resolved to approve the Eastern Economic Corridor Development Project in principle on June 28, 2016 to become a leading economic zone in ASEAN to promote 10 target industries as a mechanism to drive the economy for the future (New Engine of Growth), by implementing in 3 eastern provinces: Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao, aiming to develop both physical and social areas to enhance the country`s competitiveness, as an extension of the Eastern Economic Corridor Development Plan or Eastern Seaboard.
The EEC is part of the 20-year national strategic plan. The EEC development plan consists of:
1. Action plan for infrastructure development/digital infrastructure
2. Action plan for new cities and communities
3. Action plan for business center and financial center development
4. Action plan for target industries development
5. Action plan for tourism development and promotion
6. Action plan for human resource development, education, research and technology
7. Action plan for public relations and participation in project implementation with the public
8. Action plan for agriculture, irrigation and environment
Modern automotive industry
With its long-standing strength in the skilled workforce in the automotive industry, as the number 1 automotive manufacturer in ASEAN and number 11 in the world, today the Thai automotive industry is ready to push for EVs to occur in the country with a 0% tax policy for a period of 3 years for BEV production.
Smart Electronics Industry
Thailand is a country with expertise in the production of electronic components, which have become an important cog in the modern world. Thailand is a major producer and exporter of HDDs in the world, accounting for 30% of the total, with an export value of electrical equipment of over 24.3 billion US dollars and an export value of electrical appliances of over 35.6 billion US dollars.
Agricultural and Biotechnology Industry
With its high biodiversity and traditional economic structure based on agriculture, Thailand has a cultivation area of up to 23.84 million hectares, is the world`s number 1 exporter of cassava flour and the world`s number 2 exporter of rice.
Food Processing Industry
With agricultural products that can be produced all year round, Thailand, as the kitchen of the world, is ready to promote food processing to compete in the global market by establishing Food Innopolis for full-scale research and development of food processing. There is a 300% tax deduction for research and development expenses. In 2020, there was a total revenue from food and beverages of 393 million US dollars.
High-income tourism industry and medical tourism
Medical tourism in Thailand has been growing continuously. The government has therefore pushed for Thailand to become an international health hub. Thailand`s medical tourism expenditure is worth more than 600 million US dollars and there are more than 60 hospitals that have passed international health certification standards.
Robotics Industry:
As robots and automation become a key competitive mechanism in today`s era, Thailand has adapted to the competitive environment by accelerating learning about robot use, development, and maintenance, with a 30% increase in robots in education and research. Thailand is ranked 10th out of 63 countries with a large number of robots in use.
Aviation and Logistics Industry:
Thailand is an aviation hub in Southeast Asia with major aircraft manufacturers operating, and in the EEC area, U-Tapao International Airport aims to become the region`s aviation hub. Thailand has 38 commercial airports and 13 flight training centres.
Comprehensive medical industry,
Thailand`s hospitals are JCI certified, affordable, and have modern technology. It is the number 1 importer and exporter of medical equipment in ASEAN and has the 6th best healthcare system in the world.
Biofuel and biochemical industries
With its biodiversity and natural resources, Thailand is ready to support and create a green economy. The target for biodiesel consumption is 14 million liters per day and bioethanol is 11.3 million liters per day by 2036. Currently, Thailand has the capacity to produce Polylactic Acid (PLA) up to 20,000 tons per year. Currently, Thailand is the number 1 producer of biofuels and bioplastics in ASEAN.
Digital Industry
The digital ecosystem of Thailand is highly ready. The EEC has pushed for the creation of EECi or the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation, aiming to develop and use advanced technologies through integration between the government sector, educational institutions, and the private sector.
Defense Industry:
To increase the efficiency of Thailand`s military activities, research, development and efficiency enhancement with technology are taking place, especially in groups of tanks, armor, vehicles, drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, military robots, communication systems and weapons. The Ministry of Defense budget in 2020 is worth as much as 124.4 billion baht, accounting for 4% of the national budget, with the Ministry of Defense budget being the third highest in ASEAN.
The EEC Human Resource Development and Education Industry
aims to develop higher education by collaborating with foreign institutions, such as Amata University in collaboration with National Taiwan University to launch a program in Intelligent Manufacturing System Engineering, focusing on the development of robots that will assist in automated production systems and the automotive industry. The CMU-Thailand program is a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University and King Mongkut`s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) to offer a program in Information and Computer Science. Les Roches from Switzerland, a world-renowned institution in the hospitality and tourism industry, offers a program in Management. The education budget in 2020 is worth more than 478.9 billion baht. It is estimated that in the next 5 years, there will be a demand for more than 470,000 positions.
The highlight of EEC is not only the tax reduction policy and support for capital and various knowledge, but the strongest point of this area is the complete infrastructure that is an extension of the Eastern Seaboard, which is ready in all dimensions of logistics, whether by land, water or air.
In addition, the EEC area also looks far into sustainability in terms of environment, society and well-being. There is a project to study air pollution management in the Map Ta Phut industrial area for sustainable development, the expansion of Laem Chabang Port in Phase 3, which will use automation systems in operations, and the Map Ta Phut Port Phase 3 project.
In terms of digital infrastructure, the EECd or Digital Industry and Innovation Promotion Zone has been launched in Chonburi Province, with the installation and development of smart poles, ASEAN Digital Hub, Advanced Big Data Cloud & Data Center, IoT infrastructure, 5G testing center, etc.
Another highlight of this area is EECi or Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation, which aims to create a leading innovation ecosystem in Southeast Asia, where research and innovation lead to sustainable economic development and community well-being. In this area, there are important infrastructures, including:
1. Synchrotron light generator, 3 GeV energy level,
a research and development device that can be further developed for various applications, such as medicine, food and agriculture, advanced materials industry, the environment, and archaeology, etc.
2. Biorefinery Prototype Plant
A prototype plant that focuses on using bioinfrastructure technology for various purposes to develop and process bio-based products.
3. Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Center
Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Center or SMC under EECi ARIPOLIS aims to develop the 4.0 manufacturing process in order to compete in a market that requires high flexibility, whether it be in personnel development, business matching, sample production lines and testbeds, engineering research and development, or standards and services for assessing the readiness of the manufacturing sector.
4. The area of relaxed regulations for innovation development
is an area with mechanisms to support innovation in the industrial sector flexibly. It can be called a field for experimenting and testing technologies and innovations that are safe, allowing errors without affecting other parts, whether it is allowing the use of frequencies to develop and test innovations or allowing the testing and development of UAVs.
5. Plant Factory
Part of the EECi BIOPOLIS project that focuses on understanding the impact on plants in depth, such as the spectrum of light that will make vegetables have a crisp texture and sweet taste, etc.
6. Phenomics Greenhouse Technology
Phenomics studies are conducted to enhance plant varieties under the supervision of BIOPOLIS.
