Who can benefit from an adjustable gastric band implant?
- Adults between the ages of 18 and 60 years with morbid obesity (BMI of > 40) or severe obesity (BMI of > 35) with at least one complication (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea syndrome, joint disorders)
- People who have already tried to lose weight without success despite receiving specialized medical care for several months (dietary monitoring, physical activity and psychological treatment)
What are the contraindications?
- No identifiable prior medical treatment;
- Impossibility for the patient to participate in prolonged medical follow-up;
- Unstable psychotic disorders, severe depressive syndromes that have not been stabilized with a specific treatment, suicidal tendencies;
- Alcoholism or drug addiction;
- Severe eating disorders (such as bulimia);
- An insufficient mastication coefficient;
- Documented contraindications to general anesthesia;
- Diseases that are life-threatening in the short-term;
- Severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, severe esophagitis, gastric or duodenal ulcer, Crohn’s disease, etc.
- Severe cardio-pulmonary disorder or various organic conditions;
- Risk of bleeding due to esophageal or intestinal varices;
- Congenital abnormalities of the esogastroduodenal tract (stenosis, etc.);
- Adolescent under 18 years of age;
- Prior infection with risk of contamination;
- Habitual and continual user of aspirin or corticosteroids;
- Known or suspected allergy to silicone-type material;
- Pregnant women;
- Autoimmune diseases.
