Pelvic floor health is everything

Maybe it happens when you laugh. Maybe you can’t quite make it to the restroom, or it’s keeping you up at night. If you’re experiencing urinary incontinence (UI), it’s important to get help, and soon.

What should I know about UI?

Over 60% of women in the U.S. experience UI,1 ranging from occasional leaks when coughing or sneezing to the complete inability to control your bladder. It’s common but not normal. Why? UI is a serious medical condition that can worsen over time if you don’t take action.

What causes UI?

UI may be caused by a weakened pelvic floor, a group of muscles under the bladder. The following are some common risk factors for UI:

  • Childbirth
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Aging

UI can and should be treated

Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), commonly known as Kegels, is widely recommended and proven to strengthen the pelvic floor. The problem? Kegels are hard to do. Only 25% of women with a pelvic floor disorder perform them, and many women who do perform Kegels aren’t doing them correctly.

  • Over 60% of U.S. women experience UI1
  • As few as 25% of women with UI seek treatment from their healthcare professional
  • Women with UI are more like to report not being physically active
  • Women with UI are more likely to be admitted to a nursing facility
