In the developing world large parts of the population lack access to safe drinking water. If they do purify their water, it is mostly done by boiling it on inefficient stoves, with remaining forests cut down for firewood. You can now help establishing water purification (water offset) projects, as a part of your company/organisations sustainibility or CSR- work.
Water footprint
People use lots of water for drinking, cooking and washing, but even more for producing things such as food, paper, cotton clothes, etc. The water footprint is an indicator of water use that looks at both direct and indirect water use of a consumer or producer. The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the individual or community or produced by the business.
Water compensation
Through the Water compensation project, you have the opportunity to purify a specific quantity of water to compensate for a product, a service or an event. This should preferably be based on a verified water footprint calculation. Each SolarWave can purify up to 1.8 million liters of safe drinking water per year, with the possibility to offset from 10 000 liters and upwards. In order to not incentivize overconsumption, the water is not given for free, but sold at a subsidized price, lower than that of buying firewood for boiling the water.
You will receive individualized information about the water purification and can opt for additional texts, pictures, videos and even a “water ticker” for your website.
