RapidisPickup and Delivery Route Planning Software for ArcGIS

SHARE

Logistics Planner for ArcGIS, Pickup and Delivery edition will route plan and optimize scenarios where a drive order has both a pickup task and a delivery task. This is the case for courier services, demand responsive transport like school buses and medical trips and handling containers with construction waste etc.

The route optimization software needs to combine these many pairs of pickups and deliveries making an overall transportation plan for a fleet of vehicles that is both cost efficient and respects all restrictions, constraints and special considerations.

Logistics Planner PD for ArcGIS has a number of functionalities dedicated to route planning within Demand Responsive Transport.

For most route planning scenarios it is commonly agreed, that the preferred transport plan is the plan that minimizes total costs derived from drive time, wait time and start costs for resources – provided that goods are delivered to the right address at the right time.

Route planning and scheduling for DRT is different. We want to favor schedules with high passenger convenience. Also we need special functions for restrictions and constraints to ensure that the route planning can handle objectives like “who can travel together at the same time – and who can not?” or “this passenger needs to be driven by a chauffeur known to him.”

More Cost Elements than Esri NA VRP Solver

The cost function minimizes the sum of all cost elements.

For DRT planning Rapidis has added:

  • Travel time for individual passengers; this helps to secure low individual travel time
  • Pickup or delivery outside time window
  • Exciding max travel time for passenger
  • Using resource outside preferred group

The cost function also minimizes common cost elements:

  • Drive time for busses
  • Start costs for additional busses
  • Idle time for the busses
  • Task time for both pickups and deliveries
Restrictions and Constraints
  • Multiple loads and capacities
  • Time windows with late delivery/early pickup
  • Several variations for chauffeur breaks
  • Sibling Orders forced on the same bus
  • Same location group planning offers better plans
  • Order groups controls who can or cannot travel in the same bus at the same time
  • Resource groups helps secure that a passenger is always driven by a familiar chauffeur
  • Multi delivery/pickup at same location function that makes total service more realistic
  • Fixed routes allow other orders to be allocated to the bus before and after predefined routes

For ArcGIS Desktop and Server

With ArcGIS for Desktop, Logistics Planner is installed as an extension on users’ desktop machines and supports a traditional GIS professional / Planner workflow.

With ArcGIS for Server, Logistics Planner is used to deploy REST web services to be integrated in existing workflows or to form the basis of new workflows or applications.

Web services can be cloud hosted web services managed by Rapidis or they can be deployed to on premise ArcGIS Servers.
