Dehisced Surgical Wound Post Calcaneal Repair - Case study
Patient History
Patient is a 54-year-old male who underwent surgery to remove implanted hardware and osteophytes following a calcaneal fracture repair. Post-operatively, the surgical incision dehisced. The resulting wound was open for a period of 4 weeks and was refractory to standard of care, wet-to-dry dressings, and an Unna boot. Patient was offered the option to be referred to a plastic surgeon for a possible flap but did not want further surgery.
Primary Diagnosis
Disruption of external operation (surgical) wound
Treatment & Outcome
Patient was seen weekly, and the wound was sharply debrided with a 15 blade and treated with applications of Restrata every other week. The Restrata was fenestrated with a 15 blade and affixed with Steri-StripsTM. Primary dressings included wound gel based on moisture content and a petrolatum-based non-adherent. Secondary dressings included 4x4 gauze, roll gauze, and compression wraps. Patient achieved closure after three Restrata applications.
