The ADEXUSDx® Acetaminophen Test is an enzymatic assay used for the qualitative detection of elevated acetaminophen levels in human whole blood, plasma, or serum samples. It can be used as an aid for healthcare professionals in the diagnosis of acetaminophen overdose. Acetaminophen is the most widely used analgesic-antipyretic medication in the world and an overdose is one of the most common poisonings. Without rapid treatment, a very large overdose of acetaminophen can lead to liver damage and possible death. Acetaminophen is one of the most commonly used over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers. When ingested in therapeutic doses, the majority of acetaminophen is conjugated in the liver and excreted in the urine. Acetaminophen overdose is a common clinical problem. Ingestion of toxic amounts of acetaminophen causes more of the drug to be metabolized to a highly reactive intermediate, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine, by the CYP2E1 isoenzyme of cytochrome P450. Failure to detoxify or clear this metabolite leads to fulminant hepatic failure.
