Adiponectin Elisa Kit

BACKGROUND

Adiponectin which can also be called AdipoQ, GBP-28 and Acrp30 is a recently identified 30kDa protein that is 244 amino acids in length. It is a product of the apM1 gene that is present in 0.01% of total serum proteins and is mainly synthesised by adipocytes, however, there is evidence that it can also be produced by hepatocytes and muscle cells. Adiponectin belongs to the superfamily of soluble defence collagen proteins where it contains a collagen-like domain that is domain structurally homologous with complement factor C1q-like globular domain, collagen VIII and collagen X.

Until recently, IGF-I was the only known natural inductor for its synthesis which possess a globular C-terminal domain and a collagen-like N-terminal. Also, up to now there have been two different receptors that have been cloned adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) and adiponectin receptor 2 (AdipoR2), where AdipoR1 is found to be expressed abundantly in skeletal muscle, whereas AdipoR2 is expressed predominantly in the liver.

The concentration of adiponectin is found to correlates negatively with glucose, insulin, liver fat content, body mass index and triglyceride concentrations. Furthermore, it correlates positively with hepatic insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, insulin sensitivity and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Beside the correlation with BMI, adiponectin level are associated with insulin-resistance, linked with type II diabetes, involved in inflammatory processes, associated also with glucose and lipometabolism. On the whole, adiponectin has the potential to become a clinically relevant parameter which can be used to routinely measure individuals that are at risk for type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis.
