Why Flow works

Depression may have multiple causes but often is associated with lowered activity in the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC). This area of the brain helps regulate mood, focus, and can even impact sleep and appetite. When this area of the brain fluctuates in activity (more or less active) these functions are affected.

The Flow tDCS headset delivers a weak current (2 mA) to the DLPFC via electrodes placed on the forehead, to restore activity in brain cells which result in a reduction of depressive symptoms. Since Flow is able to directly target specific brain areas involved in depression the side effects are less severe than those from antidepressants.

If you feel more than a tingle

Brain stimulation is not something that is common as a day-to-day activity. It is normal that the sensation feels a bit uncomfortable at first. The majority of users do not experience any side effects, but some users have reported:

  • Skin irritation (<1%)
  • Headaches (~1%)
  • Tinnitus (<0.5%)

These side-effects often subside after a week of treatment when the body has grown more accustomed to the stimulation. If you experience any of these while using Flow, our team is here to help.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is the technique used in the Flow tDCS device. This type of brain stimulation has been used to treat depression for decades, but should not be confused with electroconvulsive therapy (formerly known as electroshock therapy). The current used in tDCS is 400 times weaker and has never been associated with serious adverse events. The Flow tDCS device delivers a constant low-strength electric current through two electrodes placed on the forehead to stimulate brain activity and help improve the symptoms of depression. In the largest tDCS study to date, 24% of patients completely overcame their depression, while 41% found that at least half of their symptoms disappeared after six weeks using this technique (read more about the Science).

The Flow tDCS device is Bluetooth controlled and managed through the Flow depression app. Consequently, the first thing to do is to download the app Flow – Depression.  Inside the app you will meet your virtual therapist, Flow, who guides you through the treatment programme. The app will give you step-by-step instructions on how to start the headset, put it on and begin your first stimulation session.
