Coronaviruses belong to a large family of potentially harmful RNA viruses. In humans, they are known to be involved mainly in respiratory infections ranging from the common colds to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The recently discovered coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, causes coronavirus disease COVID-19, a significant global health problem. Rapid identification of infected individuals helps limit the spread of the virus and improves the treatment of the patients. The standard method of COVID-19 diagnosis is the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from nasal, nasopharyngeal swabs or from the sputum sample.

The viral nucleic acid detection of 2019- nCoV is located in the open reading frame of ORF1ab and the nucleocapsid protein N genes.
Human housekeeping gene is used as internal control (IC) to monitor the sample quality.
