Physical contact is an essential part of the human experience. From a warm handshake or sympathetic hug to handling our food and medicine, we interact most directly with our world and each other through touch. However, physical contact exposes us to a significant threat we cannot see: the spread of infectious diseases. Microscopic pathogens, germs, and viruses are most commonly spread by human hands, and handwashing is the best defense against the spread of disease. But, what most of us do not realize is that we are often washing our hands incorrectly. In fact, in 2018, the USDA found that American consumers did not wash their hands correctly 97% of the time. These misperceptions can lead many to believe they are clean and safe when they may actually be increasing the risk of infection spread.
