Principle: The intragastric balloon occupies a volume in the stomach which causes a feeling of satiety and a reduction in food intake. Treatment should be combined with dietary and behavioral management.

The Program: Before the procedure:

Comprehensive care within a multidisciplinary team, in conjunction with the attending physician. This team is made up of:
A gastroenterologist : He places and extracts the balloon and accompanies you throughout the treatment;
From a nutritionist, endocrinologist or dietitian: They advise you on a formula adapted to your situation by taking note of your eating habits;
A psychiatrist or psychologist: They assess and treat eating disorders;
And an anesthetist-resuscitator : He monitors all of the body`s functions throughout the balloon insertion and extraction procedure.

You must be informed of the advantages and disadvantages of the balloon, the obligation to remove the balloon after 6 months, the need for multidisciplinary care and long-term follow-up. Contraception should be advised to patients. The decision to place the balloon must be taken after discussion and consultation with the multidisciplinary team.

The pose of the ball:

Under general anesthesia with or without tracheal intubation under endoscopic control.
In the endoscopy room , with equipment for monitoring vital and respiratory functions by professionals who have received specific training for the placement of the balloon

After the ball is dropped:

You will receive progressive and adapted refeeding advice, anti-secretory, anti-emetics, anti-spasmodics and/or analgesics will be prescribed to you. Perform a blood ionogram and serum creatinine (3rd day) Consultation with a member of the multidisciplinary team every 4 to 6 weeks. Therapeutic education program, implemented with the multidisciplinary team before the procedure and continued afterwards. You should be informed about the warning signs, complications, follow-up methods, dietary and behavioral management. It is recommended to contact your doctor immediately in the presence of blue-green urine, which may be a sign of balloon leakage .

Instructions to follow after setting up the ball:

Eat slowly, calmly while chewing food Reduce food intake by using small plates.

If you feel acid reflux or bloating, stop eating, split your diet into three meals and 1 snack, avoid snacking, drink at least one and a half liters of water a day . Do not drink and eat at the same time. A glass of water half an hour before the meal and one to two glasses of water half an hour after the meal are useful in order to rehydrate and especially to clean the ball which avoids the unpleasant returns which are linked to the stagnation of food around the ball.

Avoid soft drinks . Too strong tea and coffee are also not recommended. Avoid tobacco. Do not take the evening meal too late. Reach at least two hours before going to bed Intensify physical activity. Walk at least 15 minutes a day .

Physical activity:

Resuming physical activity is very important because it allows you to stabilize the weight loss . This recovery must be gradual. The more weight you lose, the easier it will seem. Take the opportunity to increase the duration of your physical activity.

The first month: gradual resumption of physical activity. The simplest activity being walking: get off public transport one station before arrival, park a few hundred meters from your place of work at the beginning then increase the distance gradually.

Tip: Buy a pedometer from a sports store and try to take 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day. After the first month: you can resume any sport.

Food hygiene tips

Drink 1.5 of water a day . To preserve vitamins and minerals prefer steam cooking. Use a list of equivalences and a table of caloric values of foods to vary your meals. Use spices and herbs to spice up your preparations in order to avoid salt (lemon juice, cumin, pepper, curry, paprika, chives, parsley, etc.). Do not skip any meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner are necessary You can however add 1 snack in the afternoon.
