Breath Biopsy - Biomarkers on Exhaled Breath

Non-invasive analysis of biomarkers on breath in early detection and precision medicine. Exhaled breath is more than just air, it contains over 1,000 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as microscopic aerosol particles, also known as respiratory droplets, originating from the lungs and airways. Both VOCs and breath aerosol represent rich sources of biological information. Breath Biopsy provides an entirely new way to access this information by collecting and analyzing breath samples.

The measurement of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the body`s metabolic activity is a powerful approach for health monitoring and disease detection. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gaseous molecules that can be sampled quickly and non-invasively from breath with Breath Biopsy®. They can originate either from within the body (endogenous VOCs) or from external sources such as diet, prescription drugs and environmental exposure (exogenous VOCs). Studies have identified over 1,000 VOCs that can be found on breath, alongside respiratory droplets they provide a rich source of information regarding overall health and have great potential as indicators of disease onset and progression.

Breath Biopsy - Molecules

Owlstone Medical has embarked on an exciting project to better understand the diversity of molecules in a given breath sample. The Breath Biopsy® VOC Atlas, a catalogue of identified and quantified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found on breath, provides insight and scientific context to these molecules with the goal of enabling confident selection of candidate biomarkers for disease.
